Rural South Africa · Youth in agriculture

Every young farmer deserves a mentor who can see their plot.

Mentorplot pairs low-cost IoT plot sensors with smartphone mentoring. It matches young agripreneurs with mentors, builds coaching content and business plans, and links them to markets — grounded in real production data, not classroom theory alone.

Plot progress simulated

What it does / doesn't

Does: tracks plot data, suggests mentors, drafts plans. Doesn't: approve anything, replace mentors, or guarantee income. A human always decides.

This solution requires current AI models to operate. The models named on the AI page, or their current equivalents, are essential to the production system.

Why this matters

South Africa has high youth unemployment alongside an ageing farming population. Young people want to farm but lack steady guidance and routes to buyers.

A survey of 70 young smallholders in OR Tambo District found 81.4% struggled to reach consistent, fair markets, and only 27.1% had access to extension support (Frontiers, 2025).

How it works

    AI helpers

Model names were checked against OpenAI's September 2026 announcements. Outputs on this site are simulated.

Cost range (estimate): low pilot-scale model spend, with GPT-6 Luna priced at about $0.10/$0.50 per million input/output tokens and Sol at about $2/$10 per million. Cloud and IoT costs are extra.

    Plot stress:

How this model works. The green plot holds a sensor that measures soil moisture. As you raise the stress slider, the plot dries and the sensor turns amber, then red. The phone shows the mentor chat, and it lights up when stress is high so a mentor is prompted to help. The paper is the business plan, which grows more detailed as progress improves. In Assembly view the three parts separate so you can see each one. Drag to rotate, scroll to zoom.

    Impact

"I started SKWEKWEKWE CORP because too many talented young people in rural communities are left to figure things out alone. I want every young farmer we reach to have a mentor, a plan and a fair route to market, and I want that to change what is possible for their families and their communities."

    Young farmers

Steady guidance, a plan and a path to buyers.

    Mentors

Data on mentee plots, so advice is timely.

    Extension officers

A shared view across many plots.

    Funders & buyers

    Verified production, not self-reported claims.

    Communities

    Local jobs and food supply.
Why we think it can work: mentor-led programmes already exist in South Africa; Mentorplot adds data and a human approval step. Honest scope: impact is design intent for a prototype, not measured results.
